The practice

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is a broad term for any practice that uses conscious, intentional breathing patterns to shift your physical, emotional, and energetic state. Unlike meditation, which tends to quiet the mind through stillness, breathwork activates the body’s own intelligence, working through rhythm, intensity, and the nervous system itself to create openings that the thinking mind cannot reach on its own.

Most of us take somewhere between 17,000 and 23,000 breaths a day, and the vast majority of them are shallow, constricted, and confined to the upper chest. Years of sitting, stress, emotional compression, and nervous system dysregulation have trained us to breathe at a fraction of our capacity. When we breathe shallowly, we deprive our cells of the oxygen they need to function, repair, and communicate. The body enters a low-grade state of survival that compounds over months and years into fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, chronic tension, and emotional flatness.

Your breath is the one autonomic function you can consciously direct. It is the bridge between the involuntary and the intentional, between the body you inhabit and the life you’re building.

What makes it ceremonial?

Ceremonial breathwork is breathwork held in sacred container. It means the session is not simply a technique or exercise, but an intentional space with a beginning, a middle, and a closing. It is breath as ritual, where the practice is supported by the quality of presence, attention, and reverence brought to the space.

Ceremonial means the breath is not something you do, it is something you enter into. The container holds what the breath opens.

In my ceremonial sessions, the breath practice is woven together with multiple modalities to create a holistic experience that meets the whole person:

  • Intentional sound and music— curated soundscapes that support the nervous system through each phase of the journey
  • Somatic movement— gentle, intuitive body-based expression that helps energy and emotion move through rather than get stuck
  • Energy medicine and Reiki— hands-on or distance energetic support to clear blockages and facilitate deeper release
  • Generative trance— a hypnotic modality from the Dr. Stephen Gilligan lineage that works with the creative unconscious to cultivate new possibilities from within
  • Integration and integrative coaching— supported processing after the breath journey, helping you make meaning and carry forward what you’ve uncovered

Ceremonial Breathwork

Return to your body.
Return to your knowing.

Breathwork is the other half of this work. Through generative trance and ceremonial breathwork facilitation, I guide practitioners into the parts of themselves that strategy alone can’t reach.

01

Opening and intention

We begin with a grounding conversation to check in with where you are physically, emotionally, and energetically. Together, we set a clear intention for the session, or we let one emerge.

02

The breath journey

Guided through connected breathing patterns, supported by curated music and sound, you move through waves of activation, release, and integration. Somatic movement, energy work, and generative trance are woven in as the session calls for them.

02

Landing & Integration

The session closes with gentle return breathing, a period of stillness, and time for reflective integration. We process what came up together, and I offer coaching support to help you make meaning of the experience and carry it forward.

Benefits

What ceremonial breath practice can open

Nervous system reset

Move from chronic stress response into a regulated, resilient baseline. Ceremonial breathwork helps retrain the nervous system’s default from survival mode to one of presence and adaptability.

Emotional clearing

Release stored grief, anger, fear, and tension without having to intellectualize them. The breath creates a pathway for emotion to move through the body somatically and complete its natural cycle.

Mental clarity & focus

As the body oxygenates fully and the nervous system settles, the fog lifts. Many people report sharper thinking, better decision-making, and access to insight that was previously obscured by chronic tension.

Deeper self-connection

Breathwork brings you into direct relationship with your own inner landscape, your intuition, your body’s wisdom, and the quiet signals you may have been overriding for years.

Somatic release and pain relief

Chronic physical tension, jaw clenching, tight hips, locked shoulders, often has an emotional root. Ceremonial breath practice creates the conditions for the body to soften, unwind, and let go of patterns it no longer needs.

Expanded states and creative access

Through altered breathing patterns and generative trance, you gain access to the creative unconscious, a resource for vision, imagination, and the kind of knowing that doesn’t come from thinking harder.

Experiences

In their words

“You’ve genuinely helped me move my business into motion in ways I’ve been trying to do since 2021. For years I felt like I was spinning my wheels. And now I finally feel capable. I finally feel like I can hold it. That’s because of what you’ve built here and how you lead it.”

Ruth Ashburn

SOMA Flow Massage & Emotional Wellness

A wealth of information, but what sets Henri apart is how responsive and ready he is to serve and guide—even when the topic isn’t on the “menu.” I got the most out of the belief and imagine aspects—I feel more grounded inside myself because of it. Empathetic, wise, flexible, relatable, and genuinely awesome to work with.

Jen Legaspi

R.O.O.T. Method, Coach, & Author

Henri is incredible at meeting everyone where they are at in their business. He gets the ups and downs of business, because he understands the ups and downs of human. He never pushes, always encourages, will “call you out” but for the sake of empowering you into the leader you already are.

Linda Cicero

Founder, Life In Color

I’ve gotten in a flow of posting now. It’s cleaned up my wording, my website, everything. The support I get around certain blocks, the pre-work questions—they help me clearly see where I’m lacking embodiment. It showed me my relationship with my business—that I was expecting a lot from it and yet spending no time in it.

Larissa Nakamitsu

Women’s Embodiment Coach

“The year spent working with Henri was more powerful than I could have imagined. I was able to transition from the overwhelm of working IN my business to the power of working ON it. Henri is family and a regular appearance in my morning gratitude practice. Oh, and I grew my business 10X that year.”

Heather Langendorfer

Fractional CMO, Fouinder RevenueJuice

“Being coached by Henri is a gift. The space he creates with fierce love and non-judgment feels like a playground where I can explore what’s possible, where I’m holding myself back, and what needs to shift. My business has grown and taken on new and better forms thanks to his brilliant questions, thoughtful reflections, and — at the right moments — him calling me out on my BS.

Samantha Hawkins

Leadership Coach

“Henri understood what I brought to the table. He helped me see my own potential in all its facets, and guided me with thoughtfulness, openness, and more than a little straight talk – he calls me on my shit while making me believe in my own power and capacity to do more. If you have the opportunity to be coached by Henri or even have a conversation with him, prepare yourself for a powerful experience and be ready to do the deep work.”

Henri Emile

come to this work through years of personal practice, deep training, and a genuine belief that the body holds intelligence the mind hasn’t yet caught up to. Breathwork found me at a point in my life when I needed something that went beyond talk, beyond strategy, beyond the intellect. What I found in the breath was a doorway into my own somatic field that changed the way I live, lead, and hold space for others.

My approach to ceremonial breathwork weaves together multiple modalities because healing doesn’t happen in a single lane. I draw on energy medicine and Reiki, somatic movement, intentional sound design, generative trance work from Christina Berkley through the Dr. Stephen Gilligan lineage, and integrative coaching to create sessions that meet the whole person, not just the symptom, the pattern, or the story.

I am also a Certified Master Coach, an embodied business coach, and a trauma-informed practitioner. This means I understand how to hold space with depth and safety, and how to support integration so that what opens in a session doesn’t just stay on the mat but actually moves into your life.

More On Lineage & Training

Rooted in practice, grounded in lineage

The modalities I bring to this work are not collected casually. They come from deep training, personal practice, and a genuine reverence for the teachers and traditions they belong to.

Generative Trance

Certified in Generative Trance through Christina Berkley, from the lineage of Dr. Stephen Gilligan. Generative trance works with the creative unconscious to open new possibilities, heal old patterns, and support transformation.

Ceremonial Breathwork

Trained under Melissa Terese through Breathwork Worldwide. This training grounds my breathwork facilitation in a trauma-informed, heart-centered, ceremonial approach that honors the sacredness of the breath and the person breathing it.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need any prior experience with breathwork?

No. Every session is guided from the ground up, and I meet you exactly where you are. Whether this is your first breath practice or you have years of experience, the container holds space for your unique journey. I will walk you through every step.

We meet on Zoom. You’ll want a quiet space where you can lie down comfortably, ideally with headphones for the sound and music. I guide the session live, just as I would in person, adjusting my facilitation in real time based on what I’m seeing and sensing. Many people are surprised by how deep and embodied virtual sessions can feel.

Common experiences include tingling or buzzing in the hands and feet, temperature shifts, waves of emotion, involuntary movement, laughter or tears, and a deep sense of relaxation or spaciousness. Some people experience vivid imagery or felt-sense memories. Everything that arises is welcomed and held. There is no wrong experience.

Breathwork is generally safe for most people, but there are some contraindications. If you are pregnant, have a history of seizures, cardiovascular conditions, or are managing active psychosis, please reach out before booking so we can discuss whether breathwork is appropriate for you right now. I always hold safety as the foundation of every session. Please connect with your medical or mental health practitioner if you’re unsure if breathwork is safe for you.

Generative trance is a form of deeply meditative work developed from the lineage of Dr. Stephen Gilligan. It works with the creative unconscious, the part of you that knows things your conscious mind hasn’t accessed yet. In the context of a ceremonial breath session, trance elements may be woven in to deepen the experience, support integration, or help you access creative resources and new possibilities from within your own somatic field.

Private sessions are fully tailored to your personal experience. I design the session arc, music, and modality integration specifically for you, and there is space for deeper coaching and integration. Group sessions carry a different kind of power: the shared field, the collective breath, and the experience of being witnessed by others creates a resonance that amplifies the work in its own way. Both are valuable; they just serve different needs.

The integration period after a session is just as important as the breath journey itself. Some people feel deeply relaxed, energized, or emotionally tender. Give yourself space, avoid overstimulation, drink water, and be gentle with yourself. I include integration coaching as part of every session to help you process and make meaning from what arose. I personally love cashews and an orange wedge following the breath. Be gentle. A feeling of calm could last up to 72-hours after the experience. And you may get some incredible sleep!
